Not Hardik Or Shubman! India Likely To Appoint Senior Player As Vice-Captain For Champions Trophy
Rohit Sharma is confirmed to lead India in the 2025 Champions Trophy. He was confirmed as the captain for the ICC event a few days after India won the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Shubman Gill was added to India's leadership group after the T20 WC and he was appointed the vice-captain of the white-ball teams. Hardik Pandya, who was Rohit's deputy in the 2024 WC and the 2023 ODI WC, looked set to take over the T20I captaincy. But he was ignored. He wasn't even named the vice-captain in any format.
Since Shubman was given the vice-captaincy, he should assist Rohit in the Champions Trophy. But that is unlikely to happen. The Times of India has reported that there could be a change in the leadership group in ODIs for the upcoming tournament.
As per TOI, Jasprit Bumrah will be India's vice-captain for the 2025 Champions Trophy. He has been part of the leadership group in ODIs once. Bumrah assisted KL Rahul in the ODI series against South Africa early in 2022. He made his T20I captaincy debut against Ireland in 2023.

Bumrah has been part of the leadership group in Test cricket since 2022. He made his captaincy debut in the one-off Test against England. Bumrah captained India in two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which concluded on Sunday (January 5).
The BCCI is likely to announce the squad for the England series and the Champions Trophy this week. Bumrah looks all but set to be rested for the complete England series.
